Slide, match and merge your way up. Tile Twins is a free sliding number puzzle. Swipe to slide the whole 4x4 grid, merge matching tiles into bigger ones and chase a new high score.
How to play
The board is a 4×4 grid that starts with two small tiles. Swipe in any direction (or press the arrow keys, or W, A, S, D) and every tile slides as far as it can go. When two tiles with the same number bump into each other they merge into one tile worth their sum: two 2s become a 4, two 4s become an 8, and so on.
After every move that changes the board, a new tile appears in a random empty cell. It is a 2 most of the time and a 4 now and then. A swipe that wouldn’t move anything is ignored, and no new tile appears for it.
Rules worth knowing
- Each tile merges once per move. A row of four 2s slides into two 4s, not one 8.
- The tile nearest the wall merges first. With 2, 2, 2 in a row, swiping left gives 4, 2 and swiping right gives 2, 4.
- Tiles never merge with different numbers.
- The game is over when the grid is full and no two neighbouring tiles match.
Scoring
Your score goes up by the value of every tile you create by merging. Merging two 8s adds 16, and one swipe that makes two merges adds both. Your best score is saved on your device and shown next to the current score. Under the score cards you can see the biggest tile on the board right now.
When you make a 2048 tile, a “You made 2048!” banner pops up with a burst of confetti, but you don’t have to stop. Keep going and see how high the numbers can climb.
The New game button starts over any time. If you have a decent score going, it asks you to tap twice so you can’t restart by accident.
Tips
- Pick a corner for your biggest tile and don’t move it. Keep sliding in two directions, say left and down, and only use the other two when you must.
- Keep the big numbers in one row. Tiles in order, big to small, are easy to merge in a chain.
- Don’t swipe randomly. Look at which tiles would meet before you commit, especially when the board is half full.
- An empty cell is worth more than a small score. Merge when it frees up space, not just to see the number go up.
Why it’s fun
Tile Twins is easy to learn in a single swipe and hard to put down. The tiles glide and pop when they merge, the colours warm up from cool blues to hot reds and golds as the numbers grow, and every game is a little different. It’s quiet, quick to pick up on a phone and just as good with the arrow keys on a computer.
