  • Party games

Crack the emoji clue before your friends do. Play Emoji Decode Race free, a guess-the-emoji quiz for 2 to 8 players. Decode movies, phrases, places and food, online with a link or on one phone.

How to play

Everyone sees the same row of emoji, and everyone races to say what it means. A lion and a crown? The Lion King. A slice of cake and a jigsaw piece? Piece of cake. The clues cover movies from Bollywood and Hollywood, everyday phrases and sayings, famous places and landmarks, food from around the world and a few sports. There are more than 250 clues, and none repeats within a game.

Before you start, the host picks how many rounds to play (5, 6, 8, 10, 15 or 20, ten by default) and a category: Mixed, Movies, Phrases, Places or Food.

Each clue has 25 seconds. After 10 seconds one letter of the answer appears in the blanks, which also show how many letters each word has. A round ends when everyone has got it or time runs out. The answer is then shown with everyone who got it, fastest first.

Online with friends

Create a room, share the link, and everyone types their guesses on their own phone or computer. Wrong guesses stay on your own screen, so nobody can copy you, and you get a Close! hint when you are only a letter or two away. When you get it, everyone sees “Priya got it!”, but not the answer.

Typing is forgiving. Capital letters, spaces, punctuation and little words like “the” and “a” don’t matter, so “lion king” is just as good as “The Lion King”. Numbers work as digits or words: “3 idiots” and “three idiots” both count. Common short forms are accepted too, like “DDLJ”.

On one phone

Play it like a quiz show. The phone holder shows the clue to the room, everyone shouts out answers, and the holder taps the name of whoever said it first. Tap Nobody to show the answer instead. Then tap for the next clue.

Scoring

  • Online, the first correct answer scores 100, the second 80, the third 65 and the fourth 50. Everyone else who gets it scores 40.
  • On one phone, the first player to shout the right answer scores 100.
  • After the last round, the highest score wins. A tie is shared.

If someone leaves an online game and doesn’t come back within 30 seconds, they are out and the round goes on without them.

Tips

  • Read the emoji left to right. Clues usually follow the order of the words.
  • Say it out loud. Some clues are sound-alikes or puns.
  • Watch the blanks. Three short words or one long one? That narrows it down fast.
  • Don’t wait for the letter. First place is worth more than twice as much as last.

Great for groups

Emoji Decode Race works for family evenings, classrooms, office breaks and video calls. Nobody needs to be good at drawing or spelling, just quick at spotting a pun.
