Race to the finish and fence your friends in. Fence Rush is a free online party race for 2 to 10 players. Sprint across the grid to the finish line and drop fences to block your friends. No download.

How to play

Everyone starts on the bottom row of a grid. The first runner to reach the checkered finish row at the top wins the round. Win enough rounds and you win the match.

Moving: on a phone, put your thumb anywhere below the board and slide it like a joystick. Your runner hops one square at a time in the direction you push. On a computer, use the arrow keys or WASD.

Fences: you get a small stack of fences each round. Press and hold on the board to see where a fence would go, slide to adjust it, and let go to drop it. Hold near a line running across the board for a fence that blocks up-and-down moves, or near a line running up the board for one that blocks sideways moves. Each fence covers two squares. On a touch screen the preview floats a little above your finger, so you can see exactly where it lands.

There is one golden rule: a fence can never cut anyone off completely. There must always be a way through to the finish for every runner, so fences make routes longer, never impossible. If a fence would close the last gap, the game refuses it and tells you why.

Rules

  • A round starts with a 3, 2, 1 countdown. Nobody moves or drops fences before GO!
  • You can’t walk through fences or off the edge of the board.
  • After dropping a fence you wait a moment before the next one.
  • Fences can’t overlap or cross another fence, and you can’t drop one across a runner who is in the middle of a hop.
  • First across the finish wins the round. If a round drags on for 90 seconds, the runner closest to the finish takes it.
  • The board is cleared and everyone gets a fresh stack of fences each round.
  • Choose the match length on the setup screen: first to 2, 3 or 5 round wins. Fewer players get more fences each, unless you pick a number yourself.

Playing with friends

Play against computer runners on one phone, or create an online room and share the link so up to 10 friends can join from their own phones. The computer can fill any empty seats, and it plays fair: same speed and same fences as everyone else.

Tips

  • Walls beat single fences. One fence on its own costs a runner a single sidestep. Line up three or four in a row and they have to run all the way round.
  • Leave your own gap. Build a wall across the board with the opening on your side, so it slows everyone but you.
  • Watch the leader. Whoever is closest to the finish is the one to fence. Everyone else is thinking the same thing.
  • Don’t spend everything early. A fence dropped right in front of a runner one hop from the finish can steal the round.
  • Keep moving. Your thumb on the stick and your other thumb on the board lets you run and build at the same time.

Rounds are quick, so there’s always time for one more match.
