Everyone knows the word but one. Find the impostor. Play Find the Impostor free, a party word game for 3 to 10 players. Give clues, vote out the one who doesn't know the word, online or on one phone.
How to play
At the start of a round everyone gets the same secret word, except one player: the impostor. The impostor only learns the category, such as Food, Animals, Places, Jobs, Sports, At school, Movie genres, Festivals, Things at home or Transport.
Players then take turns giving one short clue about the word. Say too much and the impostor works it out. Say too little and the others start to suspect you. You choose 1, 2 or 3 clue rounds before you start (two is the default).
After the last clue everyone votes for the player they think is the impostor. If the impostor gets the most votes, they are caught, but they get one last chance: if they can name the secret word, they still win.
Online with friends
Create a room, share the link and each friend plays on their own phone. Your word (or your mask, if you are the impostor) is shown only on your screen. Clues are typed on the on-screen keyboard (or a real one) and appear for everyone. Votes stay secret until the whole room has voted.
Each step has a timer, shown at the top: 20 seconds to read your role, 30 seconds for a clue, 45 seconds to vote and 30 seconds for the impostor’s last guess. A step ends early as soon as everyone has acted.
On one phone
Pass the phone around for the roles: a cover screen says “Pass to Priya”, and only Priya taps to see her word. Then put the phone where everyone can see it. The screen shows whose turn it is to speak, so say your clue out loud and tap Done. For the vote, talk it over and tap the one player you all suspect. If you caught the impostor, they say their guess out loud and the group taps Guessed it or Wrong.
Rules
- A clue must be at most 16 letters and can’t contain the secret word itself. “Yellow” is fine for mango; “mangoes” is not.
- The impostor is caught only when they alone have the most votes: a tie lets them slip away.
- The impostor wins by escaping the vote or by naming the word after being caught. The crew wins by catching them and seeing them miss.
- If a player leaves an online game, their turns are skipped. If the impostor leaves, the crew wins; with fewer than three players left, the round ends.
Tips
- Crew: pick clues that only make sense if you know the word. “Stone” for mango works; “fruit” helps the impostor.
- Impostor: listen to the first clues, then give something vague that fits them all.
Great for groups
Find the Impostor suits family evenings, classrooms and video calls. Every player has a colour and a shape, and the word packs mix everyday things from India and around the world.
